Gus Hansen enjoyed a wonderful year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only gambler to make it to the last game in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. He won a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest enthusiasts in the world. While participating in web poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen more often than not buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I know Hansen is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has absolutely no reason to play at the game with the minimum buy in.
Buying in for the min takes almost all of the skill out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the total dollar value. I think television can skew our perception of the real world at times. The greatest players in the world may be players you have never heard about. Gus can be seen competing in online poker on Full Tilt. He normally participates in high stakes omaha high and texas holdem. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he use his talents in cash games?
