Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting assortment of betting options and because you have many individuals battling for the high, along with a few trying for the low.
